Goal Setting

This week my kiddo is off school for Fall Break. The weather in Central California has been in the mid-seventies and gloriously sunny, and nobody is in a very fall-ish mood. We’ve been doing lots of this…

Because of Fall Break, I’m allowing myself a week of sporadic writing, but as soon as my girl goes back to school, it’s back to work for me. I’m going to hit my manuscript hard. I’m going to finish my draft. I’m going to revise as necessary, And then I’m going to send my story to my brilliant and trusted critique partners. After that, there will be more revising, plenty of polishing and fine-tuning, and then my precious story will be off to my agent for her first read.

*My goal is to do all of this before my family and I move, just before Christmas.*

I feel like if I declare my goal publicly, I’m much more likely to stick to working at it and, eventually, accomplish it. So, there it is: I will make my story agent-worthy before Christmas. I think I’ll fit in a 10K or two as well. ๐Ÿ™‚

What’s your end of the year goal?

I keep saying I’m going to query at least a couple of agents by the end of the year, but I know I keep putting it off. I lost a lot of confidence in a lot of academic, life and work stuff over the summer, so I keep running in frantic, procrastinatory circles ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  2. Good luck with your goal! I’m feeling a little adrift since I finished revisions, so maybe it’s time for me to set a few goals for the next couple of months.
And also good luck with the upcoming move. I hope it’s to a great place, and that it goes smoothly through every step of the process!

    • So far, it’s a great place, Rebecca. Now we’re just waiting on orders to make it official. Best of luck with your goal setting through the end of the year. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Good luck! Your goals sound totally reasonable. I need to get some goals down for the fall, since I’ve fallen off the wagon the last few weeks.

    • I’ve fallen off the wagon a bit too, Ghenet. I thought that once my daughter started school I’d really be able to buckle down and get through this draft, but I’ve been lazy lately. Time to get my act together! Best of luck with your goal setting. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I LOVE this goal, Katy! A bit selfishly too though because it involves me getting to read your fantastic story, hooray! I can’t say enough how very excited I am. I also am so intrigued by the hints you revealed in a recent blog post as to how the story is being told – so creative and original and fresh! It is going to be fantastic, Katy! I also hope you have a wonderful time with your sweet girl on her week off, and am sending you all the biggest writing hugs and good wishes. I am in a waiting (and hopeful) period over here, but doing good ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I’ve been thinking of you, Tem! Waiting periods are so tough, but I’m thinking all the positive thoughts for you. I’m so anxious to hear about what comes of this waiting period! Knowing that my amazing CPs are excited about reading this crazy story of mine is so encouraging and motivating. I can’t wait until I finally get to send it your way. I know that your incredible feedback will make a world of difference. โค

  5. Good luck with your goals! I’m writing like crazy to get a draft done by Halloween and off to betas. I also feel like I’m more likely to get it done if I put it out there to the world ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. I’m going to be a follower, I think I need to publicly state my new goals now that I’ve finished TFD.

Keep pushing to reach those goals, Katy. You can do it!

  7. Good luck Katy! You can totally do it! and count on me to cheer you on, even though like Temre, I also have a very selfish reason: Iยดd love to read this story too โค

  8. Enjoy your week of sporadic writing! Sounds like a great way to recharge before powering through to the end. And good luck getting it done before you move. I hope you find lots of good writing moments in between packing boxes!

    • Thanks, Erin! Thanks to the Army, I won’t be personally packing boxes, but I’m definitely antsy to finish before my house is overrun by movers. Ugh… The thought of it stresses me out!
