Currently…

(I originally got the idea for “Currently…” from Kate Hart, who snagged the idea from Amy Lukavics, who picked it up here.)

Loving

Hot apple cider. Random, but it’s been tasting extra yummy lately…
My new L’Oreal Hair Serum. Finally a product to counteract our hard water…
Trader Joe’s — I always feel so happy in that store…
Babies! On Sunday, one of my favorite friends had an adorable little boy. Yesterday I got to visit him and hold him… So fun!

Reading

I’m a few chapters from the end of Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects. Just like last year’s Gone Girl, Flynn’s debut is FREAKING ME OUT. So many deplorable, pitiable characters. So many visceral, disturbing images. Such astute, evocative language. I cannot put it down.

Watching

HBO’s Girls. Lena Dunham is brilliantly funny. Never before has a show made me enjoy cringing. Also, MTV’s Catfish. I have a mini-crush on Nev, and every single episode is absolutely captivating. (On the subject of TV, I’m ready for Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones to return!)

Thinking About

The end of my revision. I’ve incorporated all the feedback my agent and I discussed and I am loving the results. Just a few chapters left in my final read-through, a quick beta test, and then my manuscript will be on its way back to the inbox of Agent Victoria… Yay!

Anticipating

That quick beta test I mentioned above? I’m swapping manuscripts with one of my favorite blog friends. We both love to read and write upper contemporary YA (with lots of romance!), but oddly enough, we’ve never read each other’s work. That’s serving us well, though, because we’re both needing fresh eyes on our manuscripts. I can’t wait to read hers!

Listening To

Ho Hey by The Lumineers… Not exactly country, but this song rocks.

Wishing

For warmer weather! I acclimated to the pleasant temperatures of my new California home pretty quickly. Lately, though, it’s been freezing! Okay, that’s probably dramatic. Today it got up to 55, but in the mornings when I get up to run… Brrr! Hurry up, spring!

Making Me Happy

My loves… always.

What’s currently making YOU happy?

Jan Plan is priority! That’s why I fell back on the Currently… format. It’s quick and easy, but still informative and fun (I think!) to read. I’ll look forward to a currently post from you soon, Kat!

  1. Erin Bowman (@erin_bowman) says:

55 is freezing?! We miraculously hit that yesterday (which is unheard of for January in NH) and I went for a walk without my coat! It felt like spring. You can come visit me so your temperature perceptions are reset…it’s a high of 30 today. πŸ˜‰

In other news, so glad you’re enjoying SHARP OBJECTS. That one is simply creeptastic!

    • katyupperman says:

Creeptastic for sure! I just finished SHARP OBJECTS this morning and yowza… So depressing. Yet, so very good, too! I love Gillian Flynn’s writing style. I recently heard she’ll be coming out with a YA project in the future. I have a feeling it will be aMaZiNg!

I hope your weather warms up soon. We’re supposed to see 70 this weekend. I hate to rub it in and all, but I’m very excited. πŸ˜‰

Love this blog idea for when I need to do a blog post. I’ll have to check out Sharp Objects, because it sounds great. I’m so excited for you for your revisions and your new agent and all the shiny wonderful things πŸ™‚

    • katyupperman says:

Thanks, Liz! Have you read GONE GIRL? Regardless, I think you’d like SHARP OBJECTS. It’s very dark and disturbing (I am not easily disturbed) but it is totally unputdownable. I finished my run a few minutes faster than normal this morning, motivated by the last few chapters waiting to be read.

I love The Lumineers! Taylor Swift is usually about as country as I get, but in the last year or so there have been a handful of popular with a heavy folk influence, and I’ve been loving that trend. (Except I have to save most of The Civil Wars for if I’m writing sad scenes…they make me so melancholy!)

    • katyupperman says:

I like The Civil Wars too, but I know what you mean about their general mood being a little sad. My husband recently told me that our neighbor is the sister of the lead singer of The Lumineers… Random, but kind of cool!

  4. Rachel says:

Sharp Objects is on my list. πŸ˜‰ (which is growing really really long, LOL) I just finished JUST ONE DAY, THEN YOU WERE GONE and USES FOR BOYS (I read TYWG and UFB in one day…at the bookstore. Shhhh!!!!). All 3 were great and I’m about to write a review/put it on my blog for JUST ONE DAY. I’m excited for your revisions and your new agent and all the things that come with *that* shininess. Have a great week Katy!

    • katyupperman says:

I just skimmed your JUST ONE DAY review. I should get my copy in the mail today and I don’t want to be spoiled. But, having learned that you loved it, I’m extra excited to read!

I hope you get to read SHARP OBJECTS soon. It is even darker and more disturbing than GONE GIRL (if you can believe that). I couldn’t put it down.

  5. Dana says:

Too funnyβ€”I was just thinking about doing one of these posts again. Maybe later this week…

Sharp Objects sounds great. I still haven’t read Gone Girlβ€”it’s always checked out. I guess I’ll have to break down and buy it. πŸ™‚

    Have a great week!

  6. zanne says:

Fun post! I tried to find Sharp Objects at a bookstore over the weekend but they didn’t have it. I would really like to read it. I’ve never seen Girls, but I would like to. Wish I had HBO. I think I’d like it. Love that song by the Lumineers! I WISH it was 55 here! This morning it was 20. 😦 I’m just glad we don’t have any snow!

    • katyupperman says:

Thanks, Zanne! I hope you’re able to find SHARP OBJECTS soon. It was absolutely captivating! Also, I hope you see some warmer weather soon… Just the thought of 20 degrees gives me the shivers!

  7. Ghenet Myrthil says:

I want to read Sharp Objects! A few weeks ago, I read her other book, Dark Places and liked it – though not as much as Gone Girl.

Congrats on the end of your revision! πŸ™‚

    • katyupperman says:

Thanks, Ghenet! I will be buying DARK PLACES the next time I place a book order. I’m a bona fide Gillian Flynn fan now. SHARP OBJECTS is absolutely horrifying, but impossible to put down. I feel weird saying I loved it because it totally wrecked me, but yeah… It was amazing. Definitely a recommend!

  8. Jaime Morrow says:

Ah revisions. Good times, good times. πŸ˜› Hope they’re going well! From the sounds of things, I think we watch a lot of the same TV shows. I still haven’t watched the most recent Girls episode, so I should get on that. And I second your comment about Game of Thrones coming back ASAP. It’s been far too long. I need some Jon Snow and Robb Stark in my life. I’m a pretty big fan of The Lumineers too. (Ho Hey is my favourite.) πŸ™‚

P.S. If you saw what it looked like outside here, you’d cry. Like, sob your eyes out crying. There is SO. Much. Snow. Bleh.

    • katyupperman says:

Haha! Thanks, Matt! I have to give most of the credit to my husband. Usually he’ll get me started begrudgingly on a series, and before I know it, I’m hooked!

  9. Nicole Mc says:

I LOVE that song. It makes me think of being around a bon-fire. (don’t ask! lol) Ok, I’m so excited for Game of Thrones I can HARDLY STAND IT! I really want to watch Girls after watching Lena’s acceptance speech the other night. She was adorable.

I’m so excited about your book revisions, oh my gosh, I want such big things for you! πŸ™‚ I’m settling in for a big edit and I’m so excited I can’t stop smiling about it!! I got some amazing feedback and suggestion (wink) that I can’t wait to work on. πŸ™‚

    • katyupperman says:

I can actually kind of see the bonfire thing…

I’m excited about YOUR book revision! I can’t wait to hear more about it, especially when you’re all done with those special suggestions. Best of luck, Nicole!

  10. Alexa says:

I love these Currently posts. I agree A GAME OF THRONES needs to start again and Ho Hey is a brilliant song.

    Congratulations on the revisions

  11. Rachel Searles says:

Ah, I’m totally going to copy you and do this one again πŸ™‚ I hear you on the cold weather–it’s freezing down in L.A.! But I heard it’s supposed to be 74 on Thursday and through the weekend…?

  12. Rebecca B says:

So glad to hear that you like Gillian Flynn’s debut! I have been craving another book like GONE GIRL lately. (Although after I finish Stephen King’s epic I need some MG/YA stat!)
I think we took your warm weather. I had my windows open for three days in a row because it was too hot in my apartment. Very weird for January.
Congrats on nearing the end of your revision!

    • katyupperman says:

Thanks, Rebecca! Yes, SHARP OBJECTS is fantastic. Several people told me it was darker and more disturbing than GONE GIRL, which I had a hard time believing. But, it definitely is. Such a compelling read, though!

  13. Elodie says:

I still need to read GONE GIRL…I have a copy of the book waiting for me but I just started SHADES OF EARTH…

Yay for swapping manuscripts – hmmm my guess it’s with Jessica πŸ˜› yes you can call me Sherlock or wrong πŸ˜› And triple YAY for finishing your revision!

Both Catfish and Girls sound like fun shows…(haven’t watched them yet)

Oh and as always ADORABLE pictures ❀

    • katyupperman says:

I’m so jealous that you’re reading SHADES OF EARTH! I ordered it, THROUGH THE EVER NIGHT and JUST ONE DAY weeks ago and NONE of them have come yet. I’m so, so sad!

And yes, Sherlock, that’s a pretty good guess. πŸ™‚
