The Band Perry is a fairly new group out of East Tennessee. There first big hit, If I Die Young, was written by lead singer Kimberly Perry for their debut album. This song is thought-provoking, haunting, and moving–all the things I want my WIP, Where Poppies Bloom to be. If I Die Young is a constant on my play list these days. Here’s the video, and below are the lyrics in full.
“If I Die Young”
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh, uh oh
Lord make me a rainbow, I’ll shine down on my mother
She’ll know I’m safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh and
Life ain’t always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain’t even grey, but she buries her baby
The sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had, just enough time
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
The sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had, just enough time
And I’ll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom
I’m as green as the ring on my little, cold finger, I’ve
Never known the lovin’ of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand, there’s a
Boy here in town says he’ll, love my forever
Who would have thought forever could be severed by
The sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had, just enough time
So put on your best boys and I’ll wear my pearls
What I never did is done
A penny for my thoughts, oh no, I’ll sell them for a dollar
They’re worth so much more after I’m a goner
And maybe then you’ll hear the words I been singin’
Funny when your dead how people start listenin’
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh (uh, oh)
The ballad of a dove Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep ’em in your pocket
Save them for a time when your really gonna need them, oh
The sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had, just enough time
So put on your best boys and I’ll wear my pearls

What about you? Any songs that have been particularly moving or inspirational lately?
Those words are gorgeous. (I’ll be back to look at the video later, when I can make noise.)
I’ve got different music for most of the things I write. Right now I’m listening to a lot of Joshua Radin–quiet, thoughtful, but sometimes really joyful music that puts me in the right frame of mind. Brand New Day’s my fave just now.
I like Joshua Radin, too. Good pick 🙂
I am going music-free for a lot of my writing right now. My laptop does this weird thing where the volume decides not to work on occasion. Because that’s convenient.
Love the lyrics, will have to listen at another computer later.
And, seriously: cutest costumes EVER. Both of you. I have been thinking the same thing– I am planning to post a pic of my kids later in the week. I love seeing everyone else’s kids!
I always write music-free, otherwise I can’t concentrate. I listen when I’m “thinking” – ei: driving, cleaning, putting on makeup, whatever…
Definitely post a Halloween! Hope you guys have a great time!
