I is for Ice Cream

Ahh, ice cream… One of my favorite foodie indulgences. I could eat it daily (some weeks I do!), but I try to stick to the healthy-ish Dreyer’s Slow Churned, No Sugar Added variety. The Butter Pecan tastes pretty darn amazing, especially with a few crumbled pretzels and some Smucker’s Sugar-Free Hot Fudge drizzled on top. What can I say? I like the extra add-ins almost as much as the ice cream itself. 🙂

Lately, I’ve had the urge to experiment with making my own ice cream, and I’ve hunted down a few recipes that look promising:

chocolate cookie dough ice cream, cookie dough ice cream, gluten free cookie recipe, homemade chocolate ice cream, chocolate ice creamHomemade Chocolate Cookie Dough Ice Cream (vegan & gluten-free)
from My Man’s Belly, a newly discovered and awesome food/relationship blog.

Easy Homemade Ice Cream without a MachineEasy (Creamy!) Homemade Ice Cream (not exactly healthful, but without a machine AND without rock salt!) from Kevin and Amanda, another cool and creative food blog.

low calorie peanut butter ice creamLow-Cal Peanut Butter Ice Cream (gluten-free and sugar-free, also without an ice cream machine!) from Chocolate-Covered Katie, a healthy dessert blog featuring tons of vegan, sugar-free, and gluten-free treats.

Traditional Ice Cream in a Bag (great to do with kiddos!) from 2 Little HOOligans, a fun craft/cooking/mommy blog.

Tell me: What’s your favorite dessert?

And, have you ever made your own ice cream? Do you have a fantastic recipe to share?

Oh, and a quick FYI: This Thursday I’m going to Rock the Drop. Please do click the image below for more information on this awesome literacy initiative!

Dude. I cannot come by your blog on an empty stomach! When will I learn? *stuffs face with cookies*

My husband is the cooking connoisseur. I’ll ask him if he has any amazing recipes. 🙂

    • katyupperman says:

Ooh, yes, definitely share if he has any good ones. And yeah… I haven’t had breakfast yet, and just responding to these awesome dessert-y blog comments is making my tummy growl.

I am that freak person that isn’t a huge ice cream fan…I eat it maybe once or twice a year. But I’m definitely going to share some of these links with my vegan friends and if they so happen to make some, I definitely wouldn’t turn it down 🙂

This post is KILLING me, Katy! Now I want ice cream and its only 9:30 AM here!!! 😛 My blog today is about my work in progress novel (and how I’m obsessed with the movie Heathers)….I mean its sooo about inspiration. 😉
My favorite ice cream flavor is…to be honest, I can never chose lol. My mom loves coffee ice cream and my dad loves vanilla chocolate chip. When I was a kid I used to love chocolate ice cream. Now i can never decide and it depends on my mood lol! Have a great day.

    • katyupperman says:

My favorite depends on my mood too, but my all-time faves are Butter Pecan and Pralines and Cream… Yum!

(Now I might have to eat ice cream for breakfast! ;))

Holy cow, those pictures look de-lish!!! And gluten free? Definitely going to have to try one of those out!
My #1 fav is definitely Haagen Dazs Chocolate Chocolate-chip ice cream. And have you tried the Ben & Jerry’s Late Night Snack? Yeah, it’s their ode to Jimmy Fallon and it’s vanilla ice cream, with chocolate covered potato chip clusters and a salted caramel swirl – sweet and salty all in one? Yep…sign me up!
I’ve made ice cream before – and had a blast making it with my niece using one of those ice-cream ball makers. Seen it? Here’s their website, if not: http://www.icecreamrevolution.com/
Now somehow my Moroccan mint tea just isn’t cutting it…thanks, Katy! 🙂

    • katyupperman says:

Ooh, that ice cream ball is way cool… Thanks for sharing, Erin! And that Ben and Jerry’s Late Night Snack sounds weirdly amazing. I’ve had ice cream with chocolate covered pretzels (YUM) and the B&J’s reminds me a bit of that. Skipping off to Safeway now… 🙂

Soo….I am guessing my dessert today will be Ice Cream 😀 (Lucky I got some cookie dough ice cream in the freezer!)
I love desserts, I love sweets…so many to choose from: éclair au chocolat, carrot cake, my sister´s chocolate cake, ile flottante, creme brulée, tarte au citron meringuée, a tiramisu cake the aunt of my husband makes (so YUMMY), framboisier, fondant au chocolat…Hmmm, hmmmm….:D

Ice cream is a serious weakness for me. i can’t buy it or I’ll eat it every day until it’s gone. I have a weakness for oreo mcflurries at Mcdonalds too… mmm!

Mmmm…yummy ‘I’ post, Katy 🙂 I’m a major sucker for Marble Slab (like Coldstone Creamery) ice cream treats. I do tend to stick to eating ice cream strictly in the summer, but only because it makes me too cold if I eat it when it’s cold out. Those recipes/sites sound really good. I’ll have to check them out.

As for Rock the Drop→ I’m thinking of taking part and even have a plan in place for what books I’d drop, but I’m not sure where to leave them. Any suggestions?

    • katyupperman says:

I have a plan for the books I’m going to drop as well, Jaime… Ones that didn’t turn out to be for me but received rave reviews from nearly everyone else. Might as well spread the love and give them new life, right? 🙂

My plan is to force my husband into helping me, first of all, then I’m going to go out into our (small) town around 2pm (right before the high school lets out) and drop books at the McDonald’s and coffee shop across the street from the school. I’m going to tape the bookplates right to the front covers of the books, too, so it’s very clear why they’re laying around. I don’t want a teenager to feel weird about picking one up, like they’re stealing or something.

So, yeah, that’s my very loose plan. Hope it helps, and I’m looking forward to hearing about how the Drop goes for you!

I love ice cream! It is probably my favorite food, so I 100% support this post. Haha. I’ve made my own ice cream only once before, and it was in my high school chemistry class as like a “fun” lab. All I remember was rolling a cold coffee can back and forth with my lab partner. Hah.

    • katyupperman says:

We did that in high school chemistry too! And when I was teaching fifth grade, we did the rock-salt-and-plastic-bag method, which worked surprisingly well and made for some pretty tasty ice cream. The kids loved it!

  9. Ghenet Myrthil says:

OMG now I want ice cream. I love ice cream but don’t eat it too often because I’m lactose intollerant. But I can have it in moderation with the help of Lactaid pills. And there are a few brands (Lactaid and Breyer’s) that makes lactose-free ice cream. I agree that the toppings are the best part. I’d love to make my own dairy-free ice cream someday!

  10. cvaldezmiller says:

Mmmm…ice cream. My favorite food group.

I’ve made it homemade, but it’s never quite as good. I’m especially fond of Coldstone, but I have to be pretty hungry. That stuff is really rich.

    • katyupperman says:

Sure, totally for research. 😉 I have an ice cream scene in my WiP too. It’s already written, but revising it might require some “research,” I think.

  11. Colin says:

Mmmm… chocolate ice cream. And isn’t it interesting that a picture of chocolate cookie dough ice cream can still look really really good, no matter if it’s vegan/gluten free or not. It just LOOKS really good. And the vegan/gluten free version might taste good too–I’ve not tried it. After all, it contains chocolate, so it’s off to a great start. 😀

    • katyupperman says:

Seriously! I’ve found that chocolate (cocoa powder, specifically) goes a long way in masking otherwise “healthy” food. And you’re right: that ice cream looks aMaZiNg!

  12. angelicarjackson says:

I use the Ice Dream Cookbook–all the desserts are coconut milk-based, so they can be vegan. Luna and Larry’s makes some pretty awesome commercially-made coconut milk ice cream–they had a limited edition Ginger Cookie Caramel Swirl that was to die for (and gluten free and vegan).
