NaNo Update #1

Progress (word count or a general status update): 2,823

Current Mood: Enthusiastic

Inspiration: And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it. ~ Roald Dahl (Love!)

Goals as of Today: Continue stockpiling words for the weekend so I can have some fun with my family.

Recent Favorite NaNo WiP Line: While observing young soldiers: Another had forgone the ever popular buzz cut in favor of a Bic-clean shave. In Bree’s opinion, that was an unwise choice.

Non-NaNo News (because life DOES go on): I’ve pulled a muscle. This does not bode well for my morning runs, which does not bode well for my NaNo musings. Here’s hoping said-muscle starts cooperating, and quick.

In my downtime (ha!) I’m reading: Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler — really cute so far!

You should read this blog post: It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year By: Lindsay Roth Culli Because: She shares lots of fantastic arguments for giving NaNoWriMo a shot. Namely, gaining experience, the sense of community, and having fun. Plus, she quotes Anne Lamott!

You should also read this blog post: Denver and the Mind Reader By: Maggie Stiefvater Because: Simply, she’s awesome, and this story kind of gave me chills. And she mentions The Pig!

Gratuitous Photograph (because you know I love ’em!):

♥ Minnie and Merida ♥

So, how’s NaNo going for you? (And if you’re not NaNo-ing, how’s your November shaping up?

Sadly, there’s not more information yet, Liz. I’m still working out some of the details, but soon I’m going to write a little synopsis (like you posted in your update today) and I’ll add it to my NaNo page. Basically, there’s an affluent girl who loves to run and a not-so-affluent young soldier who also loves to run. Things proceed from there. 🙂

This is great! Love the Halloween pic 🙂 This was the first year in a few years that I haven’t dressed up ( haven’t gone trick or treating since the 3rd or 4th grade – all my friends stopped being my friends in 4th grade and my bff moved away and we stopped being friends too so why t&t alone). I actually have not seen BRAVE but I guess I need to now 😉 As for Nano, I wrote about 1,000 or so words on my personal counter and I am SO CLOSE to 30,000!! That’s 50% – halfway to being done. Holy &^%$!!! 🙂 Have a great weekend, Katy!!

Thanks, Rachel! And yes, please watch Brave soon… It’s very cute.

Awesome job with your project! Halfway there is HUGE! That’s always when I start to feel like I might end up with a real story. 🙂

Congrats on 2823! Awesome start. I am 1016 more words on my way to finishing a sh!tty first draft, so thanks to all you NaNo-ers for the motivation. 🙂

Great start! You’re writing in 3rd person past? That makes me happy because I’m trying it for the first time myself with my NaNo book. It seems most YA books I read are first person, but after writing my first manuscript in first person present, I needed a break from that POV! Anyway… 🙂

Love the Halloween pic. Your daughter is SUCH a cutie!

    • katyupperman says:

Yes, third-person past, which is SUCH a departure for me. I’ve never done anything BUT first-person present. I have to say, I kind of like how this is coming out so far. We shall see how it goes as I get deeper into the story.

Congrats on your awesome NaNo start… Here’s to keeping up our impressive paces. 🙂

Yay for progress! I’ve been working on my 2010 NaNo and am at the tail end of my second re-draft. It’s been so hard to stay motivated, but I’m happy to be surrounded by so much good writing juju! I wrote 3222 last night!

My WiP is third person past as well! It actually started in first person but during redraft #2, I realized how much better it would flow in the 3rd person.

    • katyupperman says:

3222 is fantastic! I’m glad to hear of someone else rocking 3rd-past. It’s pretty under-represented in YA, but I like to read it when it’s written well. Hopefully *I’m* writing it well! 🙂 Good luck finishing your draft, lady!

I haven’t started my NaNo yet mostly because I was too busy finishing the Raven Boys! Such a fantastic read! I still have book hangover from it, haha. I hope to get some NaNo-ing done tonight and this weekend though. I need to stockpile too since I’ll be busier as we get through the month.

Go you though! I saw your great progress on Twitter. Also, I looove your costumes! Your girl’s wig is amaaaazing, right in the spirit of animated Merida’s glorious locks. 🙂 I’m off to read that Maggie entry!

  6. Jillian says:

Thanks for cheering me on for NaNoWriMo — I’ll definitely be doing the same! These updates are such a great idea, and I’m glad to see other 3rd person-past writers too. Best of luck with the writing and healing/running!

Thanks, Jillian! Glad you’re finding the updates useful… It’s fun to read about everyone’s progress as we really get into NaNo. Best of luck with your words!
