What’s Up Wednesday

“What’s Up Wednesday” is a fun weekly meme started by my friends Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk. From Jaime: It’s similar in some respects to the Currently… post, but it’s been whittled down to only four headings to make it quicker and more manageable on a weekly basis. You’re invited to join us if you’re looking for something to blog about, a way to let your blog friends know what’s been going on with you. If you’re participating, make sure to link your What’s Up Wednesday posts to the list on Jaime’s blog each week. That way, others can visit your post and check out what you’ve been up to. Here’s what’s up with me this week…

What I’m Reading: This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner which, so far, is just as fabulous as their co-written debut, These Broken Stars. I haven’t had tons of time to read lately, but each and every one of my spare moments are being spent with Flynn and Jubilee.

What I’m Writing: I’m slowly cleaning up my NaNo project and prepping to write its climax and conclusion, which I *think* I’ve finally figured it out. Additionally, I spent a few days reading and offering feedback on Riley Edgewood‘s super hot, super amazing upcoming contemporary NA. I wish I could give you hints as to all of this story’s awesomeness, but let’s just say, it’s very much a Katy Book, and I loved it.

What Else I’ve Been Up To: Trying to get back into a routine now that my husband’s back to work and my daughter’s back to school. Plus…

I participated in the YA Buccaneers‘s #12DaysOfBooks photo challenge and made some new Instagram buddies along the way. Above are two of my favorite photo prompts (with assistance from Daphne): “Bookcase” and “Spine Poetry” (mine reads: if i stay / through the ever night / what’s left of me / cracked up to be / something like normal / forever…). Thanks for hosting, Buccaneers!

My husband, daughter, and I spent a day exploring downtown Pensacola. We walked a ton, hit up a history museum, ate amazing burgers (and drank a spiked Almond Joy milkshake), and watched a professional hockey game.

I’ve been playing with minimalism and candy-colored photos on Instagram, which is all sorts of fun. I first learned about the look on the IG feed of blogger extraordinaire Fat Mum Slim (Chantelle), who talks about #CandyMinimal HERE. She was inspired by photographer Matt Crump, whose IG feed is gorgeous. He gives a fantastic candy-colored editing tutorial HERE.

What Works For Me: Writing has been sporadic over the last few weeks, but my girl’s back to school and my husband’s leave is over and I’m trying to buckle down. That means butt in chair and accounta-buddies, plus the knowledge that if my MS-on-sub doesn’t sell, I’ll be far less depressed if I have something shiny and new to present to my agent (don’t ask how I know this). My WiP, which is tragically ending-less, inspires me too. After all the work and heart I’ve put into it, it deserves a conclusion!

Tell me… What’s up with you today?

It’s taking all my willpower not to post candy-colored photos all day. I think they’re so fun! You should definitely give it a go — I’m excited to see what you come up with! And thanks for the offer to read. This WiP still needs tons of work, but I’d love your feedback in a few months if you’re available then. I’ll be in touch. 😉 Have a great week, Liz!

Oh, Audible… I think I need to get a subscription. But, I think I’d start obsessively buying audio books if I did! I’m loving THIS SHATTERED WORLD too. It’s tough not to curl up and spend the day with it! Have a wonderful week, Sarah!

Love those candy coloured photos, I’ll have to check that out.
I can’t wait to get my hands on This Shattered World, it looks so good.
Good Luck getting back into writing and getting that ending done.
    Have a great week.

I bought a copy of THIS SHATTERED WORLD the other day and I can’t wait to dive in! I have high hopes for it. (Though, Jubilee as a name feels a bit weird lol.) I had a ton of fun doing the #12DaysofBooks challenge too. I especially liked seeing all of your photos pop up in my feed. Love the candy-coloured stuff! I just swung by that IG feed you mentioned and his stuff is incredible. So simple, but so pretty.

Fingers crossed for your book on sub. I hope this is the one, Katy! 😀

I thought Jubilee was a ridiculous name, to be perfectly honest, but now that I know her and her story, it totally fits her character’s journey. Such a fantastic book, too. Hope you love it, Jaime!

I loved THIS SHATTERED WORLD! Now I am dying for book three (the life of a series reader is no joke). Good luck getting back into your routine 🙂

Carrie, I’ve been dropping off from several of the series I started over the last few years, but this one’s totally lived up to its hype and my expectations. I love it, and I’m super eager for the next book too! Have an awesome week, lady!

I read Riley’s debut, VIP, end of last year, really enjoyed it and then embarrassed her on Twitter about a certain hot scene. ha! Good luck with your Nano book and writing in general!

  5. Niki says:

Isn’t it amazing how much little people and husbands can mess up word counts? Lol. Good luck giving your Nano an ending!

  6. Rebecca Barrow (@RebeccaKBarrow) says:

Wasn’t #12daysofbooks so fun? I’m not so great at IG challenges but I can’t help joining in!

I can’t imagine the feeling of suspense that comes with being on sub but I know the (horrible) waiting of querying and you’re right, working on something else is the best way to quell the depression. Deciding to stop querying is always easier when I have something new and polished to start over with. Fingers crossed that you won’t have to go through that again, though — and good luck working out that ending, Katy 🙂

    • Katy Upperman says:

I loved #12DaysofBooks! I’m pretty much game for any and all IG challenges, as you might’ve noticed. 🙂

And yeah, being on sub basically sucks. Distractions are good, and there’s no better distraction than working on a new story. Best of luck with the querying, Rebecca. I’m totally cheering you on! ❤

I feel very behind because I still have to pick up a copy of THIS SHATTERED WORLD. It came out so close to Christmas that there wasn’t really time to put it on my list. I’m glad to hear it’s living up to the first book!

Wow, those photos are pretty enough to be book covers! You might have to incorporate them into a moodboard sometime. Now that you have more writing time on your hands, I hope the end of your NaNo story falls nicely into place! Have an awesome week!

    • Katy Upperman says:

Thanks, Erin! I’m having lots of fun with the photos. 🙂 And TSW is excellent so far. Totally suspenseful, and I’ve been super impressed by how the events of THESE BROKEN STARS are playing into this book. Amazing plotting! Hope you get to read it soon, and have a wonderful week!

Been loving your Instagram feed lately! Beautiful photos. I always feel like a total stalker though when I hit like on Everything.

Hope you have a great week getting back into the swing of things. (Writing and otherwise) 🙂
