(I plan to do a “Currently…” post every other Tuesday. You should join me! Find the origins of the idea HERE.)

I met Morgan Matson! She’s been one of my favorite authors for a long time now (Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour is among my top five favorite contemporary YAs) and in person, she’s an absolute delight. Listening to her talk about writing and characters and travel-as-research and the inception of her novels’ ideas… I’m feeling so inspired. Plus, she could not have been more personable and genuine. I picked up her latest release, The Unexpected Everything, and had a copy of Amy & Roger signed for a future giveaway. Keep an eye out!

I finished reading Summer Skin by Kristy Eagar and it was freaking amazing. Look for it on The Book Depository if you want to order — well worth your money, I think! I also read my very first Swanky 17 ARC: You Don’t Know My Name by Kristen Orlando, a spy story with dashes romance and family angst — really fantastic. Now, I’m reading Renne Ahdieh’s The Rose & the Dagger, sequel to The Wrath & the Dawn, one of my very favorite novels of last year. Guys, how gorgeous is this book? Watching

Still obsessing over Game of Thrones and Outlander, but that’s pretty much it. I have very little patience when it comes to TV. That said, once I turn in this round of Kissing Max Holden edits, I’m going to give Parenthood a shot. Thoughts?

Listening To

I finished listening to Judy Blume’s In the Unlikely Event and I enjoyed it so much. The cast is huge, but the character who’s given the most focus is a fifteen-year-old named Miri, and she’s adorable. Now, I’m waiting for Me Before You by JoJo Moyes to become available because the movie trailer! 😍

Thinking About

Knocking out what’s left of my second round of Kissing Max Holden edits. This round has been easier than the first, but isn’t it funny how when it comes to revising, a tiny change at the beginning of the story ends up snowballing into adjustments made throughout the entire manuscript? Still, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love revising, and I’m thrilled to work on KMH during the early morning and late into the night if that means I’m making the story stronger.

Our summer travels… We’re meeting friends at a lake house in a few weeks, and at the end of August we’ll be spending five days with my husband’s parents in Washington, then five days with my parents in Arizona. My daughter is super excited about quality time with her grandparents!

You’ll check out the recently revealed Swanky 17 covers! They’re all so gorgeous — my fellow Swanks are winning the cover lottery all over the place! Find the YA covers HERE and the MG covers HERE.

Making Me Happy

Today’s our thirteenth wedding anniversary! My husband’s out of town (of course — he’s only been present for half of our anniversaries) but we celebrated on Saturday night with dinner at The Melting Pot, which was delicious. And… he got me (us) a new mattress! We’ve had the same crappy mattress for the duration of our marriage and I’ve been (not-so-subtly) hinting that we need a new one for a few years now. And he surprised me with a really nice one. It’s like sleeping on a cloud… 🙂

Did you post a “Currently…” this week?
Let me know in the comments, and I’ll be sure to visit!

Happy anniversary!!! I’m totally jealous of your new mattress 🙂

Agreed about The Swanky 17 covers – I’m loving them!

Good luck with your edits and have a good week. Warm weather is on the way, from what I hear.

    • Katy Upperman says:

Thanks, Jennifer! I’m so happy to know that sunshine is finally coming our way! I think we’ve had more than our fair share of rain this spring. Hope you have a wonderful week, and enjoy the lovely weather!

  2. Jaime Morrow says:

A mattress as an anniversary gift is about the best thing I can think of. Ours is pretty crappy now. LOL I hope you had a great time on your anniversary date!

I’d *really* like to dive into THE ROSE & THE DAGGER (OMG autocorrect totally changed that to Duggar hahaha), but I think fantasies are off the table for a while. It took me way too long to finish TWK. :-/ Can’t wait to hear what you think of it, though!

It’s so great that you got to meet Morgan Matson. She seems like she’d be such a sweet person in real life. And, like you, I’m a huge fan, particularly of AMY & ROGER’S EPIC DETOUR. Such a fun book!

Have a great week, Katy! Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I did a post today too!

    • Katy Upperman says:

So, I don’t want to brag too much about our new mattress, but wow. I slept SO WELL last night. Totally worth the splurge. 🙂 I’m loving TR&TD so far, but I know what you mean about fantasy being a challenge when you’ve got lots of other stuff on your plate. I hope you get to read it soon, though. I love the world building in that duology. Can’t wait to check out your post, Jaime!

My “Currently” this week is filled with Morgan Matson stories, too! You’re right, she’s a total delight – my desire to get published just doubled (if that’s possible!) because I want to join her circle of writer friends!

I’m watching Parenthood right now (about to start season 3) and loving it. I kind of came to the Parenthood party for Lauren Graham, but I’m sticking around because I love all the other characters too! Dax Shepard is so funny, and Mae Whitman plays Lauren’s daughter (Rory Gilmore left some big shoes to fill!), who is wonderfully infuriating and totally teenager. I can’t wait to hear what you think when you start!

I just gave into the read-book-before-movie pressure and put ME BEFORE YOU on hold at my library…I’m number 62 in the hold line. At least they’ve got 50 copies in circulation!

Happy anniversary! ❤ Have a wonderful week, Katy!

I’m listening to the audiobook of TR&TD, which changes the feeling of a book sometimes, but I’m not as in love with it as the first. The language feels stilted with an abundance of cliches. I should have just gotten the written.

        • Katy Upperman says:

I just finished the written and I thought it was pretty excellent! But yeah, I totally know what you mean about audiobooks impacting the overall story. There’ve been a few stories I’ve listened to and really disliked, mostly because of the narrator. But, sometimes the narrator is really fantastic! Total gamble. 🙂

I’m jealous of everyone who met Morgan Matson (she and Siobhan Vivian were so close and yet so far from me at the beginning of May which just makes it worse. *pout*) AMY & ROGER’S EPIC DETOUR is very likely in my Top 5 too.

I too love revising. I’m learning to draft all at once and not revise as I go. I can’t wait to get notes back on F2P so I can revise, revise, revise!

    And happy anniversary!

    and here’s what I’m up to currently…

  5. Alice says:

Dude, a good mattress is VERY important! I’m so glad you have a new one and that your husband picked up on the hints. 🙂 Happy anniversary again!! I loved the wedding photo you shared. It’s so dreamy and beautiful.

I still need to actually read a Morgan Matson book. My sister enjoys them though. She read Since You’ve Been Gone and is currently reading the Unexpected Everything. She was mostly tempted by all the dogs on the cover though, lol.

Good luck with the rest of your revisions! I am looking forward to your travel photos!! Oh, and I did manage to do the Currently post for today too!

    • Katy Upperman says:

Oh, Alice. Please read AMY & ROGER’S EPIC DETOUR as soon as possible. You will love it — it’s centered around travel! Can’t wait to check out your Currently post. Have a lovely week!

    • Katy Upperman says:

I’m so glad you joined in this week, Leslie! You should totally make it a habit. 🙂 Can’t wait to check out your post, and have an awesome week!

  6. Rachel says:

ME BEFORE YOU was great. I cried at the end. Prep yourself, Katy. I do struggle now though because there’s been a lot of talk about ableist stuff (like spoilery stuff happens and it’s a bit trope-y in regards to physical illness and love and being saved by love) BUT at the same time I really really enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the movie. I am revising currently (AGAIN,…..I can’t seem to quit this book) and have been reading here and there. I just finished up BIG MAGIC which I adored and got my creative juices excited again. Sounds like you’ve had a great week w/meeting Morgan Matson and also your anniversary!

    • Katy Upperman says:

I highly doubt I’ll cry because of ME BEFORE YOU — I never cry, Rachel! Best of luck with revisions. The fact that you can’t quit that book means you’re truly passionate about it, and that means it must be published one day. (It better be!) Have an awesome week, lady!

  7. Kari Marie White says:

    Happy anniversary!

Parenthood was wonderful. I was sad when it ended. I am also looking forward to ME BEFORE YOU but not sure I’ll get to read it before I see the movie. Have fun revising. I’m with you revising is so much more fun. :p

    Sweet dreams!

I posted my currently a bit late:

  8. Erin Funk says:

I am woefully behind on reading Morgan Matson’s books, other than Amy & Roger, which I loved so much. How awesome that you got to meet her! I’ve been meaning to read THE WRATH & THE DAWN for ages now, so your stamp of approval is making me realize I need to get around to it already, especially since I’ve been in the mood for fantasy lately.

I’m totally with you on enjoying revisions. It’s way less daunting to have something already down to work with. Glad to hear your KMH revisions have been going well, even if it’s a ton of work.

I haven’t read ME BEFORE YOU yet, but the movie looks perfect for a date night and I was so bummed that it wasn’t out yet when I was planning our anniversary date last week. Sounds like you had a great early anniversary! Wishing you guys many more happy years together! 🙂

    • Katy Upperman says:

I can’t wait to see ME BEFORE YOU! I’m about 15% through the audiobook and already loving it. ❤

Erin, I think you'd really enjoy THE WRATH & THE DAWN. I'm pretty picky about fantasy, and I loved this duology. The worldbuilding is fantastic, and the chemistry between the two MCs is through the roof. You'll have to let me know what you think if you give it a read. Hope you had a fantastic weekend!

  9. crystalschubert says:

Happy anniversary again! Sleeping on a new mattress is one of the BEST feelings!

And I’m so jelly of all the author/writer events you guys get up there in NoVA/DC! I wish some authors would come down to Richmond for a change! 😉 We got Jenny Han last year, but that’s just because she’s from here. If it weren’t for the INSANE traffic, we’d move back up to NoVA for the cultural events alone!

    • Katy Upperman says:

Ugh. The traffic. I can’t even… Honestly, I didn’t want to move to NoVA/DC at all, but I’m liking it so much more than I thought I would — mostly because of all the things to do, especially the book-ish things. I guess it’s a trade off. 🙂 Speaking of Jenny Han, she’s on my shortlist of Must Meet Authors. I love her books so much! Was she adorable in person? Hope you’re having a great weekend, Crystal!
